This composition by Lou Harrison is not particularly well documented; I had to update the
Wikipedia entry of keyboard works to include this piece, although I had checked to make sure that it actually was
composed by Lou Harrison and playable on a piano. Although there was some ambiguity as to the piece’s origins, I
finally decided that since it was published as primarily a piano work, then it should be included in a list of works for
keyboard.

I first heard this waltz in a concert at the 'Logos Foundation' in Ghent as part of a collection of
contemporary compositions written for piano in the waltz style.  In the mid-seventies, the music publishers C. F. Peters
brought out a volume of 22
waltzes composed by contemporary composers at the time. This work was included among
them. Harrison himself had the following to say about this piece : 	
"A Waltz for Evelyn Hinrichsen was written in
1977 for  publishing project of C.F. Peters, ‘The Waltz Project,’ which takes the form of an homage to a
remarkable woman and friend who used to help me as music librarian when we were both young at Mills College and who
later became the thoughtful, generous, and endearing matriarch of the publishing house of C.F. Peters Edition."

There is some ambiguity about the instruments it was originally intended for. The references I've found have included
the following:

[1] for attuned harp and percussion,
(Bill Alves helped Harrison with the attuning of
many of the instruments he composed for and information uploaded by him about the specific tuning required for this work

[2] simply as a piano solo,
[3]
for piano, harp or guitar.

It may well have been initially composed as a more complex work with specific
attuning as suggested by Alves, but I think its history as a solo piano work became cemented when it was published by
C.F. Peters as a piano work as part of its collection of 22 waltzes : The Waltz Project. This could be when it became
dedicated to Evelyn Hinrichsen who almost undoubtedly invited Harrison to include a work.

In any case, this
work is gentle, mellow, at points uplifting and somehow sad at the same time. It should be played slowly; and I can't
imagine anyone actually dancing a waltz to it.
